Are you a strong leader who thrives in a fast-paced, deadline driven work environment looking for a stepping stone into a retail management position? Natural Grocers is a growing company and we are opening stores in new communities across the western United States.  This role will ensure the success of the store through managing all departments on a cycle. Knowledge accumulated in each department over a 90-day period will develop your skills exponentially.

Responsibilities

Setting Yourself and Others Up for Success: Your main objective is to learn to effectively operate each store department over a 90-day period rotation. These departments include: Produce, Dairy/Frozen/Bulk, Receiving, Grocery, Body Care and Vitamins. Department Managers are responsible for the successful operation and profitability of all departments which includes training, directing and monitoring all department staff. Additionally, are required to fulfill the duties of the Manager on Duty (MOD) on a scheduled basis. Key Responsibilities for this role at all times include but are not limited to:

  1. Providing World Class Customer Service as a number one priority.
  2. Exemplifying integrity, responsibility, excellence and adhering to all policies.
  3. Creating an inviting, full and shoppable department.
  4. Ordering for each department and maintaining optimal inventory levels.
  5. Managing margin, COGs and overall department profitability including minimizing shrink and maximizing effective purchasing.
  6. Offering and following up on special orders.
  7. New products are brought in on a regular basis to provide customers with new choices and to keep the department fresh.
  8. Mark-downs and customer returns handled per company standards.
  9. Customer returns handled per company standards.
  10. Opening and closing of store, including DSR and the closing cash process.
  11. Working with other department managers to cross-train staff to accomplish all needed tasks.
  12. Assisting in interviewing and hiring for store needs.
  13. Working with the store manager to address performance and/or disciplinary issues within the store.
  14. Handling register functions including backup cashiering, managing customer returns, addressing customer complaints, and covering register shift changes, including those for scheduled breaks.
  15. Maintaining the safety and security of customers and employees.
  16. Answering customer questions per company standards and policies, including the use of Structure/Function statements and/or statements of nutritional support.
  17. Continually increasing product knowledge.
  18. Passive demos are conducted at a minimum of once per month.
  19. Cost of goods sold is maintained within company standards.
  20. Product is ordered from the correct vendor in order to receive the correct discount and maintain margins.
  21. In-stock conditions meet company standards, including:
    1. good selection;
    2. top 50 sellers per department are in stock at all times unless manufacturer outs, including:
  22. Product mix is monitored and perishables are rotated and stocked per company standards

 

Produce: specific responsibilities

  1. Setting and maintaining the department on a daily basis including ensuring that the produce rack is consistently fresh, full and abundant throughout the day.
  2. Culling, crisping, rotating and properly handling/storing produce.
  3. Ensuring only certified organic produce is ordered and received.
  4. Ensuring all in-stock products/conditions meet company standards.
  5. Ensuring that all tools and equipment are cleaned in accordance with health department and company standards.
  6. Receiving all incoming produce orders per company standards.

 

Receiving: specific responsibilities

  1. Accurately receiving all incoming products including date, accuracy and damage checking.
  2. Scanning all incoming and outgoing product.
  3. Staging products for efficient delivery to the sales floor.
  4. Processing all POs, RPOs, mispicks, invoices and paperwork timely and accurately.
  5. Researching and processing all discrepancies.
  6. Communicating with department managers regarding delivery issues and vendor out-of-stocks.
  7. Following up on special orders.
  8. Operating a forklift and pallet jack as required.
  9. Maintaining a clean and organized back room.
  10. Ensuring all in-stock products/conditions meet company standards.

 

Although this is a general outline of job responsibilities all employees are expected to be “hands on” and do whatever it takes to get the job done and make the company thrive.

Qualifications

  2. Ability to work effectively under pressure - staying calm in challenging situations and in all interactions with other employees and customers.
  3. Ability to exhibit patience and understanding when working with others and adapt to various learning styles.
  4. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  5. Must be self-motivated and capable of working independently.
  6. Driven to succeed in meeting all deadlines in a timely manner.
  7. Schedule must be flexible and must be willing to work evenings and weekends
  8. Demonstrated success in training individuals and groups on various topics.
  9. Strong verbal and written communication skills – to provide clear direction and training and manage emails and other inquiries.
  10. Staff management experience is a plus.
  11. Must have full store hours availability
  12. Able to manage changing priorities
  13. Proven analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills
  14. Excellent customer service skills and a passion for the Natural foods industry.
  15. Show interest in natural/organic foods and supplements
  16. Proficient in MS Word, Excel and Outlook
