Job Summary


Provide leadership and expertise in areas of environmental, occupational health and safety), safety training and risk management in compliance with all applicable Federal and State laws. This individual is responsible for all aspects of safety for Natural Grocers which includes developing and facilitating companywide safety training to increase safety awareness and support a safety culture to minimize work-related accidents and injuries


Key responsibilities include the following essential functions, but are not limited to:

  • Oversees the Natural Grocers' safety training programs for bulk packaging, construction, maintenance, and retail personnel throughout the US.
  • Coordinates provisions of OSHA and other regulations related to occupational safety and health; coordinates the development and implementation of the corporate environmental safety standards and policies, and Web-based manual systems.
  • Utilizes knowledge of federal and state regulations to make recommendations and decisions regarding safe work practices.
  • Provides guidance and technical expertise to all managers, supervisors and employees regarding mandatory requirements and safety procedures; recommends or directs corrective measures to ensure employee safety and adherence to state and federal requirements.
  • Coordinates the research and topics involving retail, industrial safety and hygiene, including hazardous materials, communicates and disseminates information, and implements actions to resolve related problems.
  • Develops, organizes and facilitates mandatory safety training in compliance with regulations; evaluates training effectiveness.
  • Maintains all records required by law, including management of Master Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), training and health testing.
  • Provides for investigations of accidents to determine root causes and implements and/or recommend preventive measures to prevent future occurrences.
  • Develops and manages the EHS program budget, including support staff, safety supplies and training costs.
  • Lead continuous improvement in safety processes
  • Responsible for Food Safety and Food Quality.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • The position requires frequent travel to Natural Grocers' regional facilities 25-50% of the time


Education, Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental, Health and Safety or related field required.
  • Five to seven years of progressive safety leadership and management experience.
  • Knowledge of grocery retail, production and construction environments preferred CSP certification required
  • Advanced knowledge of the Federal Occupational Safety & Health Act, applicable State laws; and safety and health related ANSI, ASTM, WISHA, and ASME standards preferred Knowledge and experience in training in a group environment
  • Proficient skill in computer software applications, including Microsoft Office
  • Professional certification in OSHA 40 hours Hazardous Waste Operations, or other related fields preferred Supports DOT rules & regulations compliance
  • Forklift trainer certification preferred.
  • Ability to multi-task, interact with employees with diverse backgrounds and good problem solving skills.
  • Must have excellent written, verbal and presentation skills
