Overview

The Job in a Nutshell:

The Tax Manager is responsible for managing Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage, Inc.’s tax compliance, accounting, and reporting activities with a primary focus on indirect taxes and related income‑tax responsibilities. Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, this role oversees sales and use tax, property tax, income tax provisions, tax credits, and depreciation‑related tax matters in a multi‑state retail environment. The Tax Manager serves as a key subject‑matter expert and business partner to Finance, Accounting, Accounts Payable, and Treasury, supporting audit readiness, internal controls, and continuous process improvement across tax functions.

Responsibilities

Main Ingredients:
1. Indirect Tax Compliance
a. Manage the preparation, review, and timely filing of sales and use tax, property tax, and other indirect tax returns across multiple jurisdictions.
b. Maintain and oversee tax calendars to ensure all required indirect tax filings and payments are completed accurately and on schedule.
c. Support tax rate maintenance, exemption management, and nexus analysis activities related to indirect taxes.
2. Income Tax, Credits, and Provisions
a. Lead the preparation and review of quarterly and annual income tax provisions, including related journal entries, roll‑forwards, reconciliations, and financial statement disclosures.
b. Support corporate income tax compliance by preparing supporting schedules and reviewing returns prepared by external providers for accuracy.
c. Research, apply for, and support compliance related to enterprise zone credits and other income tax credits, as applicable.
3. Fixed Assets and Tax Depreciation
a. Review fixed asset acquisitions and dispositions for appropriate tax treatment and depreciation.
b. Maintain and reconcile tax depreciation schedules and support related analyses and reporting.
4. Audit Management and Internal Controls
a. Lead and coordinate tax audits, including sales and use tax, property tax, and income tax audits; respond to notices; and manage documentation requests.
b. Maintain tax documentation and monitor compliance with internal control procedures to support audit readiness and SOX requirements.
5. Advisory and Cross‑Functional Support
a. Monitor changes in federal, state, and local tax laws and assess potential impacts to the Company.
b. Provide tax guidance and training to internal stakeholders, including Accounting and Accounts Payable, to promote compliance and consistent execution.
c. Partner cross‑functionally on ERP‑related tax configuration, reporting, and process enhancements.
6. Continuous Improvement
a. Identify opportunities to improve tax processes, controls, documentation, and reporting efficiency.
b. Participate in cross‑functional initiatives and special projects as assigned by Finance leadership.
7. Supervisory Responsibilities
a. Interview and choose prospective employees based on skills, knowledge, and abilities required for the job
b. Train and oversee employees
c. Direct assigned tasks and provide assistance as needed
d. Assist with performance evaluations

Qualifications

Recipe for Success:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  2. CPA, MST, or equivalent professional certification preferred.
  3. Minimum of 5 years of progressive corporate tax experience, including multi‑state compliance required.
  4. Strong knowledge of U.S. federal and state tax regulations, with experience in sales and use tax and property tax strongly preferred.
  5. Experience working with ERP systems (SAP experience a plus).
  6. Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to partner effectively across functions.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must have the ability to occasionally lift or carry up to 50 lbs.

  • Must be able to constantly use the computer for data entry and use of mouse.
  • Must be able to constantly sit, use fine motor manipulations, and reach outward for the duration of the work shift.
  • Must be able to frequently grip, bend, twist, and turn.
  • Must be able to occasionally walk, stand, squat, kneel, and reach above chest as needed.

 

Environmental Requirements:

  • Must be able to work occasionally with cold, heat, sharp tools and equipment, noise, contact stress, dust, fumes, and congested worksite.
