  • Overview

    The Bulk Production Manager is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean and efficient bulk operation at the Natural Grocers Distribution Center in Golden, CO.  This position is responsible for managing the bulk foods packaging operations, including equipment, processes, finish goods inventory, and budgets. The Bulk Production Manager hires, trains and develops staff of up to 45 crewmembers.  This position monitors KPI’s and provides strategic planning for optimization of labor, materials, and equipment.  Provides clear communication to stores and internal departments on relevant information; Ensures policies and procedures are communicated and followed by staff; Contributes to planning for Food Safety compliance and future departmental growth.



    • Oversees the scheduling, packaging, and FG inventory of bulk department products
    • Manages inventory of all packaging materials and consumables supplies
    • Provides solutions and makes necessary adjustments to meet demand of bulk products for Natural Grocers stores
    • Monitors and trends KPI’s in production to identify cost cutting opportunities
    • Analyzes processes and recommends improvements for first time quality, employee training, operational efficiencies, and planning for business growth
    • Cross trains in all areas to gain hands-on knowledge of bulk operation
    • Works with Finance dept and DC Manager to create and maintain department budgets
    • Utilizes production data to recommend and justify capital spending and staffing improvements
    • Creates and maintains job descriptions, SOP’s and work instructions to stay current with production processes and FSMA requirements
    • Assists in preparing and maintaining the facility for FDA audits
    • Participates on the facility Safety Committee and the Food Safety Committee


    • This position understands the Natural Grocers Employee Handbook and sets a positive example by following and enforcing all company policies
    • Develops a work environment in the facility that promotes trust, teamwork, safety, and quality
    • Hires, trains, evaluates and develops crew members as needed
    • Provides cross-training to supervisors and others for support during crewmember absences
    • Ensures supervisors and team leaders are fulfilling all duties
    • Monitors, finalizes and approves payroll for department personnel
    • Conducts annual performance evaluations on production department employees
    • Maintains all employee files including records of training, discipline and goals
    • Manages and implements corrective actions assigned by Quality Assurance and Safety
    • Plans, delegates, and monitors progress on work assignments and special projects
    • Communicates clearly with corporate office and supporting staffs regarding priorities, tasks, schedule changes, and needs in the department

    Qualifications and Experience:

    • Minimum 5 years- experience in a production/manufacturing manager capacity
    • Knowledge of food production, sanitation and good manufacturing practices preferred
    • Strong operational knowledge of production / operations / manufacturing
    • Working experience with equipment operation and maintenance
    • Experience managing and developing department budgets
    • Hands on experience working with packaging machinery or food production equipment
    • Experience with SAP preferred
    • Must possess strong leadership skills and ability to manage and develop a diverse workforce
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
    • Working knowledge of MS applications including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and ability to grasp additional business-related applications

     Physical Requirements:

    • Must have the ability to lift 50 lbs, repetitive lifting up to 50 lbs.
    • Must be able to carry up to 50 lbs.
    • Requires the use of both arms and both hands with full range of motion
    • Must be able to bend at the waist and knees, twist, push and pull on an occasional basis
    • Must be able to kneel, squat, and climb as needed
    • Must be able to reach overhead and away from the body
    • Must be able to walk and stand for at least 80% of the time
