    The Quality Assurance Supervisor position is responsible for ensuring the food safety and quality of all bulk materials received and packaged at the Natural Grocers Distribution Center.  This position assists in the development and implementation of all food safety programs and procedures including:

    1. Assisting in the continual review and development of the food safety and HARPC programs
    2. Preparing the facility for third party audits
    3. Supervision of the sanitation operations as well as the QA technicians. 

    This position is required to make decisions on product dispositions and sanitation methods and upholds all laws as they pertain to food manufacturing.  The quality assurance supervisor is a member of the food safety committee and the food defense team and must obtain HACCP certification. 


    Departmental Responsibilities

    • Monitors all aspects of bulk production operations as related to food safety
    • Upholds all laws as they pertain to food manufacturing, including but not limited to:   Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004, Food Safety Modernization Act, Food Code 2009 and other guidelines established by the FDA, USDA, and GFSI. 
    • Manage receiving program, including testing and standards definition for incoming raw materials.
    • Evaluates COA’s for compliance with specifications; recommends analytical testing of raw materials when needed
    • Communicates food safety or quality issues to bulk buyer and/or production manager
    • Determines product disposition of raw materials and finish goods
    • Performs daily walk-through of all departments to ensure, housekeeping, pest control and food handling practices meet compliance
    • Leads monthly GMP self-inspections of all areas as stated in food safety program and assists in generating QA inspection reports.
    • Responsible for environmental monitoring and testing program and reporting results to Senior Management.  Assists in all food safety documentation.
    • Ensures record retention for Sanitation Department and Quality Assurance documents:  QA Hold/Release, raw material receiving records, Hold and Release logs, Vendor management and product information, employee training, outside pest control service, labels, allergens, temperature records, food defense program, production pre-op and daily log, customer complaint forms, chemical control program, foreign material program, and other pre-requisite programs
    • Manage metal process control, calibration, and micro-biological testing programs
    • Manage label review program
    • Participates in Food Safety Team meetings, daily production meeting, and MRB meetings
    • Assists in training new hires and temporary employees in GMP’s when needed
    • Assists in development and implementation of SOP’s, SSOP’s, and quality forms
    • Assists in preparation for audits, including third party, organic certification, and other regulatory compliance audits
    • Assists in resolving customer complaints when assigned
    • Assist in generating quarterly QA report for warehouse management.
    • Responsible for SPC tracking of water activity of products
    • Responsible for documentation, retention of records, and verification and validation of methods
    • Maintains lines of communication with Bulk Manager, Bulk Supervisor, QA Manager, and Warehouse Manager
    • Assists in the continual development of FSMA hazard analysis and risk-based preventive controls program, and the food safety program
    • Enforces food safety requirements and GMP’s for all employees and visitors to the DC


    Supervision and Training

    • Participates in the hiring process for Sanitation and QA employees
    • Provides direction to and supervision of sanitation crew and QA technicians
    • Participates in the disciplinary process with management
    • Participates in the performance review process with management
    • Assists in the development of employee training programs on GMP’s, food safety, allergen program, organic standards, 3rd party audits, and other applicable areas.  May conduct training sessions when required.

    • Four-year degree in applied science and a minimum 2 years of experience in food production is required
    • Knowledge of food safety and HACCP/HARPC programs is required
    • Must be able to attain HACCP certification 
    • Must be a self-starter
    • Must be highly organized with ability to multi-task
    • Must have the ability to work with a diverse group of individuals
    • Possesses excellent attention to detail
    • Can meet all deadlines
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills required
    • Strong computer skills including MS Office
